Large Step Becomes Two

The owner of this house, Mr. C, who has suffered not one but two strokes, struggled every time he entered or left his house because of these steps. Fortunately, he wasn’t completely confined to a wheelchair. However, he did use one about 50% of the time.

Upon recieving the phone call asking for a proposal to remedy the situation, Terry Donovan visited Mr. C and assessed the property. He quickly produced a complete proposal for a simple modification that would make all of the difference to Mr. C.

He considered putting in a wheelchair ramp, but it was decided that lowering the rise of each stair would aid in his rehabilitation, as opposed to a ramp, which would just encourage wheelchair use.

So, a simple set of railingswas put in place, along with an additional stair tread that cut the existing step in half and allowing Mr. C to go up the steps and into the house much easier.

Adding to the original steps instead of tearing them out and completely rebuilding them from scratch made this project extremely affordable as well. A double handrail was also installed, giving Mr. C extra support.
